Application Concept - ECDIS Navigation Management System on a Marine Bridge

Project Introduction:

Marine electronics have become more and more important due to the increasing use of automation & control systems on seafaring vessels. This trend is due to reductions in vessel personnel, increasing safety requirements and the advent of the electronic chart. A number of large corporate groups are developing worldwide to cater specifically to this market.                     When combined with electric propulsion, even larger single-company content is possible. Advantech's FPM-8192 is designed for Marine applications on the bridge and in the control room that are certified by the DNV 2.4 standard for navigation displays. Advantech also has a 23" UXGA Marine display for applications which require radar integration with a large screen display.

Project Implementation:

  • FPM-8192V     19" SXGA Transflective Marine Grade Monitor with Resistive Touchscreen
  • FPM-8232V     23" UXGA Marine Grade Monitor with Direct-VGA, S-Video and DVI Ports
  • UNO-2182       Intel Core 2 Duo Embedded Automation Computer
  • EKI-1524         4-port RS-232/422/485 Serial Device Server

Solution:

All electronic devices for Marine usage must be held to higher standards of performance, reliability and ruggedness as they operate around-the-clock, 7 days a week, while enduring extreme temperatures, wet conditions, pollutants, and constant use.  Furthermore, the bridge display also needs to be certified with the International Association of Classification Societies to ensure the safety can be addressed during the navigation. Anti-salt corrosion is the key in this application.

This solution is designed to allow Industrial Monitors to link with a central Embedded Automation Computer (UNO) in a bridge of vessel through DVI or VGA inputs. The Embedded Automation Computer can be integrated with communication modules such as GPS to position the location of vessel. The EKI Serial Device Server can allow connection with devices such as an AIS and radar.

Conclusion:
The rugged and durable design of the FPM-8192V/8232V makes it reliable enough to be successfully integrated in this focused vertical market with dedicated certification. With its wide operating temperature range, the terminals are able to operate all day long while maintaining system stability. It's also easy for our solution partners to integrate a total solution with a display and an Embedded Automation Computer for Marine bridge applications.
